According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1 in 6 Americans face hunger. During any given month, millions of families will be out of food and forced to miss meals. Children and seniors suffer the most. Hunger in America! Not acceptable. Another problem is that the most convenient, most advertised, and most familiar foods contain poor quality proteins, low quality fats, refined carbohydrates, and copious amounts of sodium and sugar; they promote obesity. As a result, we have an avalanche of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
The BagOfLife program, developed under the nutrition guidance of Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente provides four nutritious, tasty, and easy to prepare meals:
The meals are distributed free of cost to low income families through regional food banks. These dishes are designed to provide high quality protein, complex carbohydrates, and natural dietary fiber. To prepare any of the meals, simply add water and cook. The program has been widely recognized in print, radio, and TV including a medical journal.
Another key component of the program is to provide effective nutrition education to help promote intelligent shopping, nutritious cooking, and healthy eating.
